Meet us on a lush green isle in the Pacific Northwest.
This fall, join us at Saltwater Farm on magical San Juan Island for a four day retreat designed to inspire, nourish and refresh. Days will be spent outdoors exploring the natural wonders of the island. Come evening, we’ll gather around the outdoor fire kitchen to cook meals together over the flames, then sit down to share al fresco feasts paired with local wines and spirits.
This workshop is for cooks of all levels who love food, fire, nature and adventure. We’ll deep dive into the basics of building and combining flavors, cooking with the seasons and surroundings, and mastering open fire cooking techniques with some favorite tools and equipment from our friends at Barebones.
This is a slow food and lifestyle retreat. Fun excursions will be coupled with hands-on lessons as well as plenty of leisure time to rest, soak in the hot tub, gaze at the sea, and simply take in the extraordinary beauty of the region.

Accommodations | We’ll stay at the stunning Inn at Saltwater Farm, perched atop a ridge surrounded by over 150 wild and beautiful acres with miles of trails, lushly landscaped gardens and breathtaking views. Five modern Scandinavian guesthouses tucked into the forest or facing the sea make for private, peaceful and luxurious retreats. See below for more details about accommodation options.
Meals + Refreshments | All snacks, meals and beverages will be provided.
Excursions | Enjoy day trips to explore the regions vistas and shoreline.
Lessons | Each day we will explore flavors and techniques, highlighting the bounty of the region and sharing our seasonal farm-to-fire approach to cooking. The lessons will take place outside around the flames, focusing on open-fire cooking techniques such as grilling, ash-roasting, cedar-planking, string-roasting and Dutch oven cooking. Together we’ll prep and cook dinner each evening, then sit down to share the bountiful meal we’ve created.
Materials | All class materials will be provided along with Barebones tools and equipment. You are welcome to bring an apron and your own culinary knives.
SCHEDULE
Monday, October 3 | Guests take a ferry to the island and arrive to Saltwater Farm between 3:30pm and 5:30pm to check in and get settled. Welcome cocktails, introductions, dinner, wine and merriment, then a good night’s rest.
Tuesday, October 4 | Local excursion for lunch, then free time to explore the area or relax. Return to Saltwater Farm for fire cooking lessons. Prepare and enjoy dinner from the flames together.
Wednesday, October 5 | Local excursion for lunch, then free time to explore the area or relax. Return to Saltwater Farm for fire cooking lessons. Prepare and enjoy dinner from the flames together.
Thursday, October 6 | Farewell open-fire brunch and departure by 11am.
TRAVEL
Guests are responsible for all travel to and from the retreat location, including airfare, ferry tickets and ground transportation to and from the lodge which is located in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, WA.
Guests may drive their own cars to daytime excursions or carpool with fellow retreat guests.
POLICIES + SUGGESTIONS
Insurance | If flying in to join the retreat, we recommend purchasing travel insurance to cover unforeseen circumstances such as illness/injury, natural disasters or flight cancellations.
Cancellation | Once registered, refunds are not available unless you are able to find a replacement. If retreat is cancelled by organizers due to unforeseen circumstances, a full refund will be issued to all attendees.
Fine Print | All guests must be 21 or over. All state mask, health and safety mandates will be observed. If retreat is cancelled by organizers, a full refund will be issued to all attendees; in all other cases, tickets may be transferable but not refundable. Menus for this retreat will be omnivorous. Photos and/or video from this event may be used by Tournant and its partners for marketing purposes.

SEA BREEZE CABIN | $2500/person, double occupancy | This well-appointed guesthouse boasts views of the Salish Sea from a private deck and comes with an outdoor shower and a full bathroom with tub. Also includes a loft bedroom with a queen bed. Priced as a package for a couple or two friends who wish to share this memorable experience together.
SUNRISE SUITE | $2700/person, double occupancy | A spacious king suite in the main inn featuring outstanding wraparound views, a private balcony facing the sea, and a spa bathroom with a walk in shower and deep soaking tub. Priced as a package for a couple sharing this memorable experience together.
FOREST CABINS | $2400/person, double occupancy | These private guesthouses are tucked amongst the firs and feature meadow or forest views, a bedroom with a king bed, and a loft with a queen bed. Priced individually for guests open to sharing a cabin with a roommate, or couples or friends who wish to share this memorable experience together can book two spots for their own private cabin.
