The humble onion gets star treatment during this traditional Catalan feast celebrating food, fire and community.
What is a Calçotada? Oh, just one of our favorite things ever. It is a Spanish springtime tradition in Catalonia, where entire villages make a day of feasting on a special varietal of spring onion called calçots, grilling them over the flames, then dragging them through romesco or salbitxata sauce, and eating them by hand with great gusto.
Grown by a handful of farmers here in the PNW, calçots are just beginning to come into their short season, so the time is now! This year we’re thrilled to be teaming up with our friends at Side Yard Farm & Kitchen in NE Portland for a rousing afternoon of food, fire and revelry.
We’ll gather together overlooking the tidy rows of vegetables, herbs and flowers at this thriving urban farm in the heart of NE Portland’s Cully neighborhood, enjoying a spread of tapas and snacks as you watch fat calçots and asparagus roasting over the flames.
After feasting on these verdant spring vegetables, charred until smoky and sweet, we’ll enjoy big steamy pans of clam, chorizo and white bean stew, a gorgeous spring salad, crusty bread, and a little something sweet.
Come join us as we celebrate our own PNW calçotada tradition!
